Fish-saving SafetyNet design wins the UK James Dyson award

Dyson

A Royal College of Art graduate has won the UK leg of the annual James Dyson award with an LED lit trawler net that provides small fish that would ordinarily be discarded with an escape route.
SafetyNet, designed by Dan Watson, guides the small fish to freedom with an illuminated ringed exit strategy that transforms normal trawler nets into a more sustainable fishing tool. The EU fishing quota has led to British trawlers discarding huge numbers of fish deemed less marketable in recent years. This, combined with the fact that ordinary nets inadvertently trap unwanted fish due to their poor design, has led to unknown numbers of fish being discarded into the waters every year. Watching trawlers in action when visiting fishing communities in Peterhead and Fraserborough along the east coast of Scotland, design student Watson decided a practical solution could transform the fishing industry.
